What has to sit under the screen decides which shelf works.

A bare board is enough for a plant and a few books, but a soundbar, game controllers and loose cords call for a floating cabinet with drawers or open cubbies.

The ideas here run from a plain white oak shelf and a live-edge slab to ribbed white cabinets and shelves with a built-in LED channel.

Match the shelf to the screen width or go a few inches wider, because a ledge narrower than the TV reads as an afterthought and makes the whole wall look top-heavy.

1. Single Long Floating Shelf Under TV

The shelf runs wider than the TV, while the open carpet keeps the floor clear. · 📷 @stayathomewoodworks

Swapping the entertainment center for one long shelf frees the floor under the screen, and that open stretch of carpet is what makes the room feel larger.

I would run the shelf at least as wide as the TV so the screen never looks bigger than the ledge below it. A light wood that matches the coffee table, as it does here, keeps the setup calm.

2. Stacked Shelves Under TV

Wall-mounted TV with blue backlighting and two white floating shelves below it.
Books and a sign sit on the upper shelf, with smaller decor below and room at both ends. · 📷 @marysol3274

2 parallel shelves give you a second tier for storage, and white ones disappear against a grey wall so the stack reads as light rather than heavy.

I like splitting the jobs: books and a sign on the upper shelf, smaller decor on the lower.

Leave a few inches of empty shelf at each end. A shelf packed edge to edge starts to look like a bookcase instead of a floating accent.

3. Live-edge Wood Shelf

Live-edge wooden floating shelves under a wall-mounted TV in a minimalist living room.
The front edge follows the wood’s natural curve, with just a plant and a few objects beside it. · 📷 @alanamildesign

A live edge keeps the natural curve of the tree on the front of the board, so no 2 shelves are alike. That irregular line is the whole appeal.

When choosing a slab, look at where the curve lands before you buy. I prefer the wavy edge facing out and the straightest cut flush to the drywall.

Keep the styling light. A plant and a couple of small objects let the wood do the talking, and a minimalist room around it keeps the rustic edge from feeling heavy.

4. Asymmetric Side Shelves Around TV

Asymmetric wooden floating shelves and a console surrounding a wall-mounted television.
The shelves sit at different heights, with matching wood tying their uneven arrangement together. · 📷 @mmglsmesen

Matched pairs of shelves look formal. Staggering them at different heights around the TV reads as more current, more like a composed wall than a symmetrical frame.

Repeating the same wood tone across all of them keeps the unevenness looking intentional.

I would mix plants, books and art in unequal groups. Three objects on one shelf and one on the next suits this layout better than spacing everything evenly.

5. Staggered White Shelves

The white shelves vary in height, and the books bring color to the otherwise pale setup. · 📷 @deltastar212

White shelves at different heights break up a blank stretch of drywall without adding color, so the books carry the visual interest.

Vary the gaps between shelves on purpose, with a tall space beside a narrow one, or the stagger looks like a measuring mistake. I would group books by height on a couple of shelves and leave others half empty.

A long, low white cabinet below the TV echoes the shelves, and a grey rug and light sofa keep the whole corner soft.

6. Bedroom TV with Floating Shelf

Bedroom with a wall-mounted TV and a long light-wood floating shelf above a bed
The long shelf sits against a slatted wood panel, with smaller shelves holding extra items to the side. · 📷 @arkalmuebles

In a bedroom, a long shelf under the TV can stand in for both the TV stand and a dresser top, which matters when the bed already claims most of the floor.

Against a slatted wood panel, a light-wood shelf looks like part of the wall. I would keep the surface sparse: a lamp, a book or two, nothing you will knock off while reaching for the remote from bed.

Smaller shelves to the side take the overflow.

7. Dark Walnut Floating Shelf Under TV

The dark walnut console blends with the gray wall, while a few plants and vases keep the top simple. · 📷 @myeasycozyhome

Dark walnut against a dark grey wall gives the room a low, warm glow, and the wood grain stays visible because the tones sit close together.

The console also matches the TV screen, so the whole wall feels like one block instead of a screen stuck on a wall.

Keep the styling to a few potted plants and vases, as here. Anything bright on a surface this dark will pull the eye away from the TV.

8. White Oak Floating Shelf Under TV

Light wood floating shelf under a wall-mounted TV above a modern fireplace.
White oak repeats across the shelves and bench, keeping the pale room’s wood tones consistent. · 📷 @asherartscarpentry

A white oak shelf suits a room that is already pale: white walls, light floors, a clean line of fireplace. The wood is quiet enough that the TV stays the focal point.

I would repeat the same tone in a low bench and a few shelves, as this room does, so the wood reads as a set. Mixing in a darker wood here would fight the light floor.

9. Black Floating Shelf Under TV

A strip of wood trim breaks up the black shelf and echoes the wood floor. · 📷 @saeidgomarian

Black doesn’t try to be noticed. Under a large flat-screen, a black console simply extends the TV, and the wall reads as one dark shape on white instead of a screen plus a shelf.

A solid black shelf can read flat against the wall, so a wood edge or wood accent along it adds the contrast it needs.

I would choose a trim that echoes the floor, since it ties the console to the room and keeps the black from feeling cold.

10. White Shelf with Center Cable Hole

White floating TV console with a center cable hole under a black television.
The cable drops through a center hole, making a short, straight run to the outlets. · 📷 @mathishome_

A hole drilled through the middle of the shelf lets the TV cord drop straight down to the outlets, so no wire runs across the wall face.

Center placement matters on a white shelf, where a stray cable shows right away.

I would line the hole up with the TV’s cord exit before drilling, and keep decor to the sides so nothing blocks the opening. A black wire against white will still show a little, but it’s a short, straight run.

11. Natural Oak Shelf Under TV

White vases and a book leave most of the thick oak board bare so its grain shows. · 📷 FurniComp

A thick oak board has a handmade look that thin shelving can’t match. Left in its natural tone, it brings some rustic warmth to a living room without any stain or paint.

White ceramic vases and a single book, as here, suit it well because the pale pieces let the grain stand out. I would keep the shelf nearly bare, since a thick board does the decorating by itself.

12. Hollow-frame TV Shelf

Wall-mounted TV with two wooden shelves above and a hollow-frame floating shelf below.
The open center gives the thick wooden frame space for a couple of small objects. · 📷 @ETWoodcraftsFurniture

A hollow frame is a thick wooden box open through the middle, so it has the heavy presence of a slab without the bulk. The negative space makes a natural spot for one or two small objects.

With two plain wooden shelves above the TV, the frame below balances the wall. I would keep the wood tone identical across all three pieces, and let a plant or two soften the straight lines.

13. Shelf with Decor and Books

Colorful floating shelves with books and decor surrounding a wall-mounted television.
Books, vases, and sculptures add varied shapes, with one shelf left less full for visual breathing room. · 📷 @ragnhildblom068

Color comes from the objects here, not the wall. Books, vases and sculptures give the shelves 3 different shapes to work with, so the wall holds interest even when the screen is off.

I would stack some books flat and stand others upright, then set a sculpture on a stack for extra height.

A bowl or a framed print leaned at the back adds another layer. Leave one shelf lighter than the rest so the wall has somewhere to rest.

14. Shelf with Plants and Books

Potted plants add green above the shelf, while a basket keeps the remote and small items together. · 📷 @lspinkerton1

Potted plants add something soft and alive that a black TV screen can’t. On a wood shelf, a pair of pots or a trio of them adds green without much effort.

I would vary the pot heights and let one plant spill slightly over the front edge.

Keep the books in one short stack so the plants stay the main event, and use a basket for the remote and small odds and ends.

15. Floating Shelf with Soundbar Under TV

Floating wooden TV console with a black soundbar and speaker under a television.
The soundbar sits centered beneath the TV, with the subwoofer at one end and greenery at the other. · 📷 @houseandhome_sa

A long wooden shelf gives the soundbar and subwoofer a home right under the screen, so the audio gear sits with the TV instead of spreading across the room.

I would center the soundbar below the TV, put the subwoofer at one end, and balance it with a vase of greenery at the other.

Black gear on wood has natural contrast, so little else is needed. Check the shelf’s weight rating against the gear before loading it.

16. TV Shelf with LED Channel

Dark brown floating shelves on a grey wall with integrated LED under-shelf lighting.
The LED strip is tucked under the dark shelf, casting light down the wall without showing the strip. · 📷 @doumaselectricnyc

Light that seems to come from nowhere is the appeal. An LED strip set into the underside of the shelf hides the strip itself and washes a soft glow down the wall below.

Mount the shelf near an outlet, since the power cord is the one thing that can spoil the effect.

Dark brown wood suits this well, because the glow stands out more against a deep tone than it would against a pale one.

17. Custom-size Floating TV Shelf

The dark shelf spans the marble wall beneath the TV, with little decor needed against the high-contrast backdrop. · 📷 @jthomashomegoods

Off-the-shelf lengths rarely land exactly where you want them, so a shelf cut to your own measurements settles the question before it starts.

Measure the TV’s width first and make the shelf at least that wide, as I would for any under-TV shelf.

Then measure the open stretch of wall and stop short of any corner or window. A dark wood board against white marble tile gives strong contrast, so the shelf needs very little on it.

18. Shelf with Raised Center

Light wood floating shelf under a black TV on a grey wall.
The raised center holds electronics, while the lower sides make room for books and a plant. · 📷 @nood110

Two heights on one shelf split the work: the raised center holds the electronics, and the lower wings on either side take books and a plant.

I like this because the gear stays grouped in one block while the decor sits at a lower level that doesn’t crowd the screen.

Light wood on a grey wall keeps the whole arrangement quiet. Keep the plant on one wing only, so the sides don’t mirror each other.

19. Floating Shelf with Soundbar

The soundbar sits centered on the long shelf, leaving the rest of the surface bare. · 📷 @threesixty_designs

A soundbar on a long shelf, with the TV hung directly above, keeps the audio gear on one tidy line instead of scattered across the room.

I would center the soundbar under the screen and leave the remaining surface bare.

20. Floating Shelf on Slat Wall

Dark wood floating shelf mounted under a television on a slatted wall.
The dark shelf matches the slatted wall, making the console read as part of the backdrop. · 📷 @gthomedecor

Dark wood slats behind the TV already supply the texture, so the shelf below can stay plain. A dark floating shelf in a matching tone reads as part of the wall instead of a separate piece.

Against light wood flooring, that dark band gives the room a clear anchor.

I would buy the shelf and slats in the same wood tone, or close to it, because a near match looks like a mistake while an exact one looks planned.

21. TV Shelf with Side Shelving

Matching wood links the console and side shelves, while plants and art fill the upper levels. · 📷 @csjoinery.uk

Side shelving turns a TV wall into a frame, with the screen as the picture and the books, plants and art as the mat around it. Matching wood on the console and the shelves is what holds the arrangement together.

Fill them unevenly. I would put plants and framed art on the upper shelves, where they sit near eye level, and leave the console top close to bare so the screen stays clean.

22. Floating Shelf with Built-in Lighting

Warm light built into the shelves catches on the slatted wood behind the TV. · 📷 @thewallcraftcom

Warm light built into the shelves makes the TV wall glow when the screen is off, and a slatted wood backdrop catches that light well. Warm tones suit wood far better than a cool white.

Plan the wiring before you hang anything, since a dangling cord is the one thing that can spoil a clean, lit shelf.

I would put the lit shelves beside the TV rather than directly under it, so the glow doesn’t compete with the picture.

23. Long Wooden Shelf Under TV

Drawers hide remotes and cables, leaving the console top mostly clear beneath the TV. · 📷 @veroliving.nl

A plain brown wooden console on a white wall, with a textured grey panel behind the TV, is a setup that needs almost nothing else. Drawers hide the remotes and cables, which keeps the top clear.

A console that matches the TV’s width, or runs a little past it, looks balanced. With a calm wall like this, one lamp or a single plant is plenty.

24. Floating TV Console

Floating wooden TV console with white top and under-cabinet lighting in a modern room.
The open floor beneath the floating console helps the room feel wider, while matching wood links it to the shelf above. · 📷 @decorando_minhacasa

A floating console gives the TV wall a low base with real storage, and the white top lightens the wood below it. With the floor left open underneath, the room feels wider than it would with a standard cabinet.

Light under the cabinet adds a soft glow along the wall. A floating shelf above the TV, as here, balances the console below, and I would keep the wood tone the same on both so they read as a pair.

25. Shelf Above TV with Decor

Long wooden floating shelf with books and plants mounted above a wall-mounted TV.
Books and plants sit on the shelf above the TV, with open space left along its length. · 📷 @hilltown_house

A shelf above the TV caps the wall the way a cornice caps a window, and it gives the screen a ceiling so it doesn’t float in empty drywall.

Keep the shelf close to the width of the console below it.

I would hold the styling to a few books and one or two plants, as here, and leave the rest of the length open. Heavy pieces up high are a poor idea over a seating area, so choose light objects.

26. Wood and Black Media Wall

Wood slats flank the stone TV panel, while the black console forms a clean line below. · 📷 @craft.construct

Pairing warm wood with a black console is the quickest way to give a TV wall some contrast. The black base grounds the wall, and the wood slats on either side keep it from feeling severe.

Let the stone panel behind the screen stay plain. I would put the shelves in the slat panels and keep the black console top nearly empty, so the dark mass reads as one clean line.

27. Wood Slat Accent Wall

TV mounted on a vertical wood slat accent wall with a black floating console
The black shelf stands out against the slatted wood, and its level edge follows the wall lines. · 📷 @accentwalldesigns

A black floating shelf against vertical wood slats gives you strong contrast with almost no styling. With the slats already carrying the texture, a plain dark board is all the shelf needs to be.

Mount the shelf level, because the slat lines make any tilt obvious. Light wood floors, as in this room, keep the dark band from weighing the wall down.

28. Backlit TV Shelf Wall

Wall-mounted TV with a white floating console and warm orange LED backlighting.
Warm backlighting links the white console and side shelves, with the books stacked flat to catch the glow. · 📷 @dmk.9559

Warm backlighting turns the console and the side shelves into one glowing unit, and a white console takes the orange tone well because it picks up the light instead of swallowing it.

Plan where the cords run before you hang anything, and keep the lit shelves to the sides and below the screen. I would stack the books flat, as they are here, so the glow has clean edges to catch.

29. Ribbed Floating Cabinet

White ribbed floating console under a wall-mounted TV on a wood slat wall.
The cabinet’s ribbed front echoes the vertical slats behind it, while the top stays mostly bare. · 📷 @davidwferrar

Ribbed fronts add texture without adding color, which makes a white floating cabinet look more built-in than a flat-faced one. Against a wood slat wall, the vertical ribs echo the slats and the 2 textures agree.

Ribbing is busy enough on its own, so I leave the cabinet top mostly empty: one lamp or a single low bowl at most.

30. Floating Cabinet with Drawers

White floating cabinet with drawers and wooden top under a wall-mounted television.
The drawers keep remotes and controllers out of sight, leaving room for a single plant on top. · 📷 @bazsazi_hoseinalipour

Drawers swallow the remotes, cables and game controllers that otherwise end up on the shelf top, so the surface stays clear. A wood top on a white cabinet warms it up and gives the TV wall a finished edge.

I would use the top for one plant and nothing else, as here.

31. Open Cubby TV Stand

Light wood floating TV stand with open cubbies under a wall-mounted television.
The open cubbies give the console and controllers separate spots, with the floor clear for a robot vacuum. · 📷 @tribesignsOfficial

Open cubbies turn the storage into part of the display. A light wood floating stand keeps the console and controllers within reach, and with no doors to open, nobody has to hunt for a remote.

Open fronts mean everything inside shows, so I would keep each cubby to one job: the console in one, controllers in another, cords tucked behind.

The floating base also leaves the floor clear underneath, which is useful for a robot vacuum to pass through.
